The Life Cinematic

"I have always preferred the reflect of the life to life itself." -François Truffaut
Anticipated 2005 theatrical releases
January 09, 2005

The 2005 films I can't wait to see. Or, at least, think won't totally blow. Some require qualification.

January 2005

Sigourney Weaver in Imaginary Heroes

None! What a crap month this is. Oh well, will either give me a chance to refill my bank account or catch up on 2004 releases I've missed.

February 2005

Hitch February 11
I've seen the trailer at least six times in the theater now and it looks less and less funny every time; still, Will Smith, and by this time I'll be desperate to see something.

Imaginary Heroes February 11 (LA/NY)
Who knows when I'll get the chance to see it — but looks like Sigourney Weaver's best role in years.

Bride and Prejudice February 11 (LA/NY)
Good buzz...

March 2005

Robots March 11
I'm on an inexplicable animation backlash these days, but this could be good...

Joan Allen and Kevin Costner in The Upside of Anger

The Upside of Anger March 11
Joan Allen being awesome and Kevin Costner being a washed-up ex-baseball player yet again. Ohh yes.

A Sound of Thunder March 11
Saw the trailer the other day and truthfully, it looks terrible. But, Bradbury...?

Millions March 11 (limited)
Have a feeling I will not like it as much as I think I should...

Melinda and Melinda March 18 (limited)
Limited? Come on! Who in Southern Ohio doesn't want to see the new Woody Allen flick? Dammit. Better be in Columbus, or Cleveland, because I saw the trailer and if it's not Manhattan, it doesn't look half bad.

April 2005

The Weather Man April 1
Possibly my most-anticipated of the spring, looks like a Nic Cage role to rival Adaptation. and a script to... well, at least echo American Beauty.

In Her Shoes April 15
I don't know anything about it except a snippet on IMDb, but Shirley MacLaine and a semi-interesting premise... why not.

Shirley MacLaine and Jennifer Aniston in Rumor Has It

Rumor Has It April 15
Rob Reiner's due for a return to form, and playing around with The Graduate might be the way to do it. Cautiously optimistic. And, wait, two Shirley MacLaine releases in one week? Huh.

The Interpreter April 22
Wait... I'm not interested in this at all. Except... maybe Sydney Pollack has put together a good film. Will wait for reviews before lining up.

Crash April 29
...Maybe.

May 2005

Monster-in-Law May 6
Ah, the return of Jane Fonda... in a J-Lo vehicle.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy May 6
Must read book. Am sure I will worship it; feel confident the film can be at least good.

June 2005

Cinderella Man June 3
Actually, I think it looks repellent. Still, wanted to make a note of it for some reason.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith June 10
The guilty pleasure of the summer. Hello, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Who doesn't benefit?

Gary Oldman, undeniably sexy in Batman Begins!

Heights June 10 (LA/NY)
Glenn Close, Rufus Wainwright, "character study." If this isn't my kind of film, I don't know what is.

Batman Begins June 17
Batman is the only superhero franchise I'm interested in, and this looks like it might be the best installment yet. Plus, Gary Oldman. So I'm there.

Yes June 24 (LA/NY)
I would be shocked if this film came anywhere near Ohio, what with the iambic pentameter and so forth. But I needs it, precious! Oh, and I love Joan Allen more and more every day.

July 2005

War of the Worlds July 1
Spielberg and Cruise's summer blockbuster. Why not.

Saraband July 8 (LA/NY)
Well, of course. It's frickin' Bergman.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory July 15
Would be a hideous concept to me, except for Johnny Depp lookin' like a transvestite. Will have to see, I suppose.

Miranda Richardson in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Happy Endings July 15 (LA/NY)
Independent filmmaking with a delightful cast (Maggie Gylenhaal, Laura Dern).

November 2005

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire November 18
Unapologetic fangirl.

No release date?

The Libertine
Johnny Depp might be making out with another guy. When do I get to see?

Pushers Needed
Anticipated Joan Allen project; will it even be made?

Wah-Wah
Funny name; tremendous cast (including beloved Miranda Richardson, of course).
